Invocation:
O God who spoke of old in judgment, come now to this place we gather, this worship we share, and show us the error of our ways. Speak, through your Spirit, that we may turn and begin anew. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Pastor's Prayer
We come, today, O Lord, to acknowledge our sin, our failures as a congregation and as individuals. You know our misdeeds of thought, word, and deed. Too often we have thought of war when your way is peace. We find ourselves more prone to shortness with friends, family and stranger when there was a need of understanding and a word of sympathy. You are aware that we, too often, have done what we should not have done and not done what we should.
Visit your Spirit upon us today that we may see as you see, that we may see ourselves in need of your forgiveness, that we may see our neighbor as your child, that we may see those different that we as evidence of the diversity of your creation, that we may recognize our sin.
And cause, O Lord, the recognition of our misdeeds to be the beginning of our acceptance of your forgiveness, your amazing grace, that we may acknowledge fully that, despite our sin, you love us so much you sent your son to seek us out like a shepherd a lost sheep, and, having found us, to sit down with us at the table.
In his name we confess our sin, accept your grace, and sing our praise. Amen.
A Great Thanksgiving for the Seventeenth Sunday After Pentecost
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
It is right and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away and made waste of your creation you remained our God. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. He came to us and sat at table with sinners showing us the depth of the love you have for us all.
By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection, you gave birth to your church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit.
On the night in which he gave himself up for us he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
When the supper was over he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said, “Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in remembrance of me.”
And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.
Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.
Pour out your Holy Spirit on us, gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood, that we may be not be lost.
By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at the heavenly banquet.
Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty God, now and forever. Amen.
Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf. The bread which we break is a sharing in the body of Christ.
The cup over which we give thanks is a sharing in the blood of Christ.
[Giving of the Bread and Cup]
Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which you have given yourself for us. Like the shepherd's lost sheep and the widow's lost coin, we, too, have been lost. But now we are found. Help us go forth from here to tell others that you came looking for us, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
