When the school year began, I started providing my two oldest granddaughters, high school students, with a monthly allowance. The deal I made with them was that to receive the allowance they had to give some of their money away; they had to save some of it; and they had to be able to tell me where every other dollar was spent. It was to be an exercise in knowing where their money had gone.
A couple of months after this began my daughter informed me that there was a problem in that the five-year-old didn't understand why she wasn't getting an allowance. I started sending her a little each month. Apparently, she has now discovered her older sisters are required to report on their spending to me.
Last night I received a call from her. "Okay," she said, "here's the thing. I'm not old enough to have an email and I can't text, so I'm giving my report on the phone. Last month I gave a dollar to the church. I put three dollars in my savings account. And I spent six dollars on myself. Do you have any questions?"
I didn't.
Aren't grands wonderful? I now have 6 great-grands and they are great. My 6 year old namesake Carter was sitting quietly under the tree as mom was gathering pecans. She asked why he was not helping. His reply "I am just thinking. Isn't nature wonderful?
