I was raised a child of segregation. The black kid who was my friend and I could not drink from the same public water fountain. In my first year as a pastor I received threats from the KKK because of speaking out in favor of desegregation.
And yet over the years I've thought I caught glimpse of the nation in which I live changing. It was hope against hope that the racial bigotry which was so much a part of my world was dying. Now I see it clearly.
Barack Obama, a black man, will be the forty-fourth President of the United States.
So I'm not really writing a blog today. Instead, I'm raising a mug in toast to my black boyhood friend, Lucius. We thought this day would never come. But it has.
Thank God.
Excuse me now. I'm going to just savor the moment.
It's a wonderful day for this nation!
Incidentally, the greatest sign I've seen of our progress is in my 5-year-old son. He labels people not by the color of their skin, but by the color of their shirt.

Have you or will you post the story you told me about going with another pastor and paying a "visit" to your local friendly KKK chapter?
