The parson was sitting on the front steps of the church with one of the kindergarten children. They were waiting for her mother to pick her up. As they waited the child reached into her back pack and pulled out a package of chewing gum. She offered a stick to the parson. He refused. She then placed a piece in her mouth and began to chew with vigor. She and the parson talked about her class and her brother while she chewed. The conversation lasted about three minutes. Then they saw her mother turning into the parking lot. The girl took the gum from her mouth and tossed it into the bushes.
"You mom doesn't want you chewing gum?" the parson asked.
"Oh, no, she doesn't mind," she said. "I just spit it out as soon as the sweetness is gone."
She scampered off to her car as the parson waved to her mother.
Ah, the parson thought, sermon illustrations are everywhere.
