I hope this isn't too far off topic but: The Supreme Court decision on Guantanamo detainees' rights to habeus corpus protection is an example of the sensationalist approach of the media. I come down very strongly on the side of the Court's majority, but I recognize that Roberts and Alito and Co. are not idiots and have arguable points on their side. I am willing to discuss the issue on its merits. A Mike Lester cartoon in the Rome News-Tribune this morning showed a pair of twin towers with a Supreme Court Air jetliner flying toward them. I realize that political cartoons are notoriously prone to be over-the-top, but don't you think that's a little beyond the pale for even cartoonists? Sheee! Wouldn't it be nice if the media would help Americans understand better this basic right, that I suspect Jefferson and Adams would have included among those self-evident and unalienable ones guaranteed to all men by endowment from the Creator himself?Yes, our campaigns are fought in media gotcha sound bites. Lord help the idiot politician who tries to explain a vote or position in more than a sentence or two. There'll be some snippet from it that can grab attention... Gotcha!! The state of our media and political debate is embarrassing to me.-Terrell who can never remember his log-in info!
